EXAMPLE – Improving access to affordable housing for people on low incomes in Somerset
About this opportunity
The opportunity:
We are seeking insight into the barriers individuals and families on low incomes face when accessing affordable housing, to help shape more responsive housing support and allocation approaches.
Why now, and why Somerset?:
Rising housing costs and limited supply are increasing pressure on individuals and services across Somerset. There is a need to better understand how current systems are working in practice and where improvements can be made to support those most affected.
What we hope to learn, understand, or achieve:
We want to better understand the lived experience of people trying to access housing, including challenges with affordability, availability, and the application process. The aim is to identify practical ways to improve access, communication, and support within existing housing systems.
What organisations might gain from being involved:
– Better understanding of local housing challenges
– Opportunity to influence housing systems and services
– Stronger cross-sector relationships
– Shared insight to support their own work
We are a partnership of local authorities and housing providers working together to improve access to safe, affordable housing across Somerset. We are committed to working collaboratively with organisations and communities to shape better housing outcomes.
What involvement might look like
What we are asking organisations to do:
Participants may be asked to:
– Share experiences and insight through discussions or workshops
– Help engage residents or service users in conversations
– Contribute to co-designing improvements to housing processes
– Provide feedback on proposed changes
How much time is likely to be involved:
Involvement could range from a single 1–2 hour session to light-touch input over several weeks depending on interest and availability.
How we are making it easy to be involved:
– Flexible ways to contribute (online, in-person, written input)
– Clear expectations and time commitments
– Support with engagement where needed
– Reimbursement of reasonable costs where possible
What can be shaped and what is fixed:
– Can be shaped: Engagement approach, priorities for improvement, and potential solutions
– Fixed: The overall focus on improving access within current housing policy frameworks and timelines
Delivery timeframes:
We are planning engagement between October and December, with flexibility around organisational capacity and key pressures.
