EXAMPLE – Community Data Insights for Rural Transport Access

About this opportunity

The opportunity:

We are exploring how transport access affects rural communities in Somerset and are seeking partners to help gather and interpret local insights to inform future service design.

Why now, and why Somerset?:

Recent changes in local transport services have highlighted gaps in provision, particularly in rural areas. Somerset provides a unique opportunity to test community-led approaches that can shape future service delivery at both local and regional levels.

What we hope to learn, understand, or achieve:

We want to better understand the barriers people face in accessing transport in rural areas. This includes identifying gaps in existing services, understanding community priorities, and co-developing recommendations to improve accessibility and inclusion.

Ways to get involved:

What organisations might gain from being involved:

Participants will benefit from shared learning, increased influence on transport policy, stronger local partnerships, and potential funding opportunities for future work.

Somerset Community Connect
We are a community organisation focused on improving access to essential services across Somerset. Our work brings together local authorities, residents and third-sector partners to co-create practical, inclusive solutions.

What involvement might look like

What we are asking organisations to do:

Participate in workshops, share insights from their communities, help recruit local participants, and contribute to co-design sessions.

How much time is likely to be involved:

Approximately 2–5 days over a 2-month period, including workshops and preparation time.

How we are making it easy to be involved:

Providing small participation grants, flexible scheduling of workshops, online and in-person options, and clear communication materials.

What can be shaped and what is fixed:

The scope of the research questions and engagement approach can be shaped collaboratively. The overall timeline and funding constraints are fixed.

Delivery timeframes:

Activities will take place between September and November. We aim to avoid school holidays where possible and offer flexible engagement options.
